THE
MYTH
Juno was the daughter of Cronus and Rhea and half brother to
Jupiter. He courted her, at first unsuccessfully. She took pity
on him only when he adopted the disguise of a bedraggled cuckoo
and she tenderly warmed him in her bosom, where he at once resumed
his true shape and ravished her so that she was thralled into
marrying him.
THE MATH
Sophie Germain (1776-1831)
The Frenchwoman Sophie Germain was one of the founders of modern
applied mathematics. She rose to fame in 1816 for a paper on
calculus of variations applied to the theory of elasticity.
She constantly met with derision and dismissal because of her
sex. Gauss helped her publish, realize her fame, and achieve
her genius.
